Skyfall (2012) Making of & Behind the Scenes (Part1/2)

Bond took a knife from a table and went to the door after the villain. James Bond ran down the stairs. In the next photo you can see where that scene was filmed.

Leiter offered Bond money for the poker game. In the next two photos you can see where they were standing and talking.

This time Bond won the game. He left the casino with Vesper to celebrate at dinner. The scene in the restaurant was filmed in the Granhotel Pupp.

Below you can see the table where they were sitting in that scene. Vesper left the restaurant after receiving message from Rene Mathis.

Shortly James Bond realized that it could be a trap and the girl could be in danger. He ran through the door in pursuit of her see the last photo. Dimitrios left a bag in a cloakroom.

Shortly they both began speechless battle with a knife. James Bond was the winner. The bag from the cloakroom was gone too.

Bond ran out of the building and stopped at the entrance. He took the cellphone taken from Dimitrios and dialed the number that was selected as the last one.

In the crowd of people walking in front of the building he saw a man with a bag answering his call. The whole Miami sequence was filmed in Prague in Czech Republic.

Interior scenes were filmed in the National Memorial on the Vitkov Hill photos below. The scene in which Alex Dimitrios left the bag was filmed in the cloakroom located on the second floor photo below.

When Dimitrios and James Bond left the cloak room they walked by the open door that you can see in photo below. It is possible to get there from main entrance at cash desk.

The other way is to walk down from the second floor. Stairs are located behind decorated door presented in the center of the photo below.

In the film it is possible to see people in background walking those stairs. There is steel construction of permanent exhibition visible in background.

On the left there is visible detail of stone handrail of the stairs leading to the second floor above. James Bond killed Alex Dimitrios and put his body at the stone wall.

In that scene there was decorated window visible in background, the same as in photo below. It made M Judi Dench angry.

After meeting with her superiors she was walking down the corridors in the British House of Commons with her assistant Villiers Tobias Menzies , complaining about Bond.

The filmmakers wanted viewers to believe that it was t he interior of Westminster Palace in London, but the scenes were actually shot in Strahov Monastery in Prague, Czech Republic.

In both photos you can see Philosophical Hall. M and Villiers walked through the door in the back, on the left.

They were walking in the direction from which both photos were taken. While Vesper was standing at the helm of a yacht, Bond was writing a resignation letter on his laptop.

It was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in Venice in years. When Bond and Vesper were approaching Venice, most famous buildings in the city were seen in background.

It is not necessary to buy a boat to see the view that was in front of Bond and Vesper. Not many tourists go that far, therefore it is a very peacefull an quiet place.

As you can see in photos below, while watching the view you can relax on a bench in a park or use outdoor gym. When James Bond was writing the resignation letter, there was Santa Maria della Salute Basilica visible in background photo below.

On his laptop monitor you could see his e-mail inbox with fictitious email addresses of film crew members: Anne Bennet Publicity and Marketing — anne.

When Vesper left the hotel room, M called and asked about the money that he won in Casino Royale. James Bond guessed that it was Vesper who stole the money and ran after her.

The hotel lobby scenes were filmed at the Czech National Museum in Prague. It was June when film crew was working in Venice.

James Bond tried to find Vesper under arcades that you can see in photo below. Finally he saw her walking on the bridge located at Sotoportego del Cavalletton street.

In the next scene Eva Green who played Vesper was walking alone on Ponte del Malpaga bridge see photo below. Daniel Craig was looking at her from the bridge connecting Fondamenta Toletta and Calle Lotto from which the photo was taken.

Bond followed Vesper down the Sotoportego de le Colonne. In the photo below you can see Sotoportego de le Colonne and the Ponte de le Colonne bridge in background.

Next photo was taken from the bridge towards the shadows where was hidden. Finally Vesper came to the courtyard where she met Gettler. The villain saw James Bond hiding behind the column and took Vesper hostage.

Main entrance to the building was located at Campiello Pisani, however Vesper entered the side door, which is visible in the photo below.

She turned left and passed through the doors that are closed in photo below to the courtyard. Next photo was taken from the courtyard.

Vesper came out from behind the columns. On the right in photo below you can see the column where was hiding when Vesper was talking to Gettler.

Vesper and Gettler were standing in the middle of the courtyard. When they started shooting, James Bond was running behind columns visible in the middle of the photo below.

James Bond pursued Gettler and Vesper into a building under renovation. During the fight the building started to sink.

The sequence with the building collapsing into the Grand Canal was filmed in Pinewood studio, however buildings around were all real and shot on location.

Collapsing building was digitally inserted and replaced Lion Morosini Palace second from right in photo below.

It had more than different parts designed to fall off. The inside of the sinking house was built on a special rig that measured 45 foot by 40 foot and was 45 foot high.

The scene with people looking at sinking building was filmed at Campo Erberia photo below. The scene was filmed at Santi Cosma e Damiano church.

Behind the dome of Santa Maria della Salute in photo below was visible. He took an elevator to get to his office. He was surprised to see James Bond waiting there.

That sequence was filmed at Danube House building located at Karolinska street in Prague. The first scene was filmed with the camera set at the entrance to the building opposite to Danube House.

In the shot you can see the roof above the entrance as in photo presented below. Already forgot about that one. If anyone could explain where that anchor was attached to pull the henchmens boat away from Bonds boat, i'm sure even the filmmakers would like to know aswell.

Film mistakes do happen, but that one just seems to devoid of any plausible explanation. No I'm quite serious.

Not so much about the opening car chase, but the way he edits the transitions into other scenes is pretty interesting.

There's a lot of that in WWZ too like when they arrive in Jerusalem. And honestly when I'm in the right mood, I love epileptic editing where you can barely tell what's happening.

It's supposed to be felt, not seen. Same reason that The Bourne Supremacy is one of the best action movies ever if you ask me.

Bourne Supremacy I agree is very good, however each time I watch it, I seem to think less of the shaking and quick cutting. I always come down on the side of it being there to hide absence of other things in the scene and to create a false sense of energy, while compromising clarity.

Also I seem to remember Supremacy has such overuse of long lenses and tight angles, and I remember feeling claustrophobic and trapped in the frame.

Maybe that goes with the theme of surveillance in the film, but not sure that approach is worth it, when you are sacrificing additional situational and editorial clarity for the viewer.

I seem to recall the house fight in Supremacy atleast had some cuts that are allowed to last a few seconds, while still using lenses I feel are way too tight.

The editing was one of my main issues with the movie, it didn't have any coherence at all, just really fast cuts.

It's just a shame they botched QoS so badly. I don't think you can blame the writers though, it was the same screw from CR and Skyfall But anyway, I dunno - I think there's some mild overarching plot, but no moreso than older Bond films have.

I really think Skyfall was standalone as much as a Bond film can be , and Spectre is going to kick off a new set. I'm not sure that's the strongest argument for a link among the three maybe four films.

The most convincing argument I see is:. Quantum Spectre is what will make you understand his enemies and invest you in his mission.

That's how I view them as well. Judy Dench was always one of my favorite parts of the Bond franchise during the Brosnan years; she brought a sense of reality to a series of films that were quickly growing more and more ridiculous with each passing film.

I was thrilled when they kept her on as M for the reboot, and her death was as tragic as it was beautifully fitting for Craig's Bond.

Obviously, that's not always the case because that would kind of make for a boring Bond movie , but at least we get to see that these characters truly do care about doing what's best for everyone as opposed to just doing what's best for them.

I'm so glad that MGM decided to reboot the franchise, because, to me anyway, it was dying a slow, horrible death, and dragging the name of James Bond down with it.

While Quantum of Solace wasn't nearly as good as Casino Royal or Skyfall, it was still better than most of the Brosnan Bond films post-Goldeneye, and when viewed as more of a direct sequel to Casino Royal, Quantum of Solace does have a lot of redeeming qualities to it that makes it more enjoyable to watch.

The biggest problem with the action scenes really is that a lot of them pop up out of nowhere, with no consequence. The second unit that shot the majority of the action on QoS worked on the Bourne movies with Greengrass so they're surely not the problem.

I re-watched the opening car chase from Solace and it's certainly It's just like "here's some badguys, some cool stunts, oh they're dead now and Bond wins".

Then you take, say, the car chase at the end of Supremacy and it has meaning because it's Bourne vs Kirill, the man that killed the love of Bourne's life.

There's emotion and plot driving the action and you really want Bourne to win so you're totally drawn to everything going on. I also think in Bourne they do a better job of re-orienting the viewer during the action scenes.

I suppose that does fall on Forster when it comes to Solace as he's got final cut. Oh, you've barely scratched the surface of it.

If you want to see an excellent dissection of the thousands of things that went wrong, there's four videos at this site I don't think you can blame the writers though, it was the same screw from CR and Skyfall.

They got completely boned on QoS, because the writer's strike happened in the middle of the script development, so they had no choice but to start filming with, essentially, a first draft.

And because of the strike, they weren't allowed to hire a writer to work on it. Forster and Craig were literally the only ones legally allowed to work on the script.

Given that, I actually think it's a small miracle that QoS turned out not only coherent, but fairly decent. Obviously not near Casino Royale's level, but it's a fun movie.

They definitely didn't start filming with a first draft. It wasn't up to scratch, maybe, but definitely not the first draft.

Not technically the first draft, but it was the first draft re-written by Paul Haggis, who made major changes.

I just wish the newer Bond films resulted in more awareness for some of the classic ones that are equally as good.

Did you really think Dr. No was the best Bond movie until you saw Casino Royale? I don't see how that's possible unless you haven't seen half of them.

I was extremely underwhelmed with Skyfall, so bad that I felt sorry for dragging my friends to watch it. All style, zero substance.

Casino Royale was incredible, on the other hand. Actually I'm looking for a good hand drawn poster for it. I love how you're being downvoted when I've seen multiple posts on this sub that get upvoted for explaining just how bad Skyfall was.

Sure, it was beautifully shot. The story was just awful though. I enjoyed it at the time, but the more I think about it, the led impressed I am, especially with the villain intentionally getting himself caught, escaping, purposefully and precisely setting up a tube crash at just the right moment etc It was all a little convenient.

It's an interesting movie to me.. Can't really explain why. Is it because Casino Royale is just simpler? It's to-the-point and kind of has a more fun vibe to it as opposed to Skyfall.

I will say though, that Skyfall has some great cinematography -- something that's a little lower on my list of things I pay attention to.

I tend to enjoy dialogue-driven movies more right off the bat like Tarantino. I think it was weird in a couple of ways because two movies prior it was his "beginning" as a double-0 agent.

It's strange to go from newbie to old veteran in two movies. I still enjoyed it though. I felt that too. I kind of had the same feeling with The Dark Knight Rises.

Then again, the fourth movie in the series, Thunderball, was about Bond's health. Bonds has only been a 00 for two films, yes, but based on dialogue you recognize he's not some fresh recruit to MI He recognized Silva from years ago.

Also, I gathered that the theme was more along the lines of spies being old fashioned, not necessarily Bond himself being old.

He's injured not elderly. I honestly really enjoyed it. Never seen a film so I don't know how to explain it. The whole writing style and the cinematography fit pretty well, it almost feels like a British great Gatsby.

The parkour chase scene was also cool. And how they flipped the Aston Martin. Plus Mads Mikkelsen as a bad guy afraid of the bad guys in his own story.

And stupid and pointless, i mean he need it alive and after 6 hours chasing he killed him. He has like time chances to kill him.

I just noticed that all James Bond girls of the Daniel Craig area were french: I was talking about the main James Bond girls Murino is Italian for instance , and Loneypenny isn't a James bond girl.

Severine wasn't a main Bond girl either. There really wasn't a main Bond girl in Skyfall -- M essentially filled that role.

She was the closest thing to it. Anyways, no need to be nitpicking, it's very unimportant. And she is now french, has lived longer in France than in Ukraine, she has french citizenship and no longer has Ukrainian citizenship.

Actually, her character was half-Bolivian on her father's side and half-Russian from her mother's side; one of the villains, General Medrano, mentions that Camille Montes' mother was "a beautiful Russian dancer".

But she did work for the Bolivian secret service. Depends on the person. I'm a recently naturalized citizen but I identify myself as a South African still while others once they become naturalized immediately identify as American.

She was naturalied 15 years ago, and decided to not keep her Ukrainian citizenship France allows dual citizenship. I guess she must consider herself partially French Ethnicity always "overrules" nationality.

But it's really all what the person chooses to identify as. I'm not talking about ethnicity even if I'm not sure Ukrainian is an ethnicity. She could have kept her Ukrainian nationality France allows it , she decided against it.

People can be multicultural, be "French of Ukrainian origins", or "Ukrainian-french" That's just the way I see it. Whatever your parents are is what you are.

That's what is meant by ethnicity. But like I said its up to them what they want to identify as, but she is first and foremost a Ukrainian.

That opening sequence of Casino Royale changed my worldview. It was so fun and exciting. That's what led me into the world of Parkour.

I never did the Free-running thing, but I dabbled in the efficient movement during a run. Had my friends not abandoned it a year-or-so ago, I would still be in the thick of it.

Too bad I sucked at it. Just a great film, from beginning to end. As hot as Eva Green truly is, I found her performance to be the most impressive.

She was the strongest bond girl I have witnessed. Sure, she is sexy, but she used that against us, and Bond to become quite the villain-ess. Her sassy dialogue with Bond did wonders to draw in the audience and relay to us just how 'in control' she was.

It also showed how unprepared Bond was for his situation, as she always seemed to have the upper hand in their scenes. It's funny how the script takes place here in Montenegro, but the entire movie was shot somewhere else.

They say they actually shot a few scenes in the Splendid hotel. Honestly I don't know why they did that, I mean this country definitely isn't paradise, but we do have some gorgeous locations by the seaside.

Just checked IMDB, they didn't shoot a single second here. This is a picture of the exterior http: The hotel even has this beautiful casino.

Brad Pitt shot one of his first movies here actually, in Kotor. The last scene where he kills Mr. White looks exactly like Montenegro.

They did a good job of making it look like they were there. It may look like Montenegro, but is actually Lake Como. Also, he didn't kill Mr.

White, just kneecapped him. A lot of making films is cost of production and avaliblity of tax rebates, although it's ideal to film in the place the film is set, it's more ideal to get a few extra shooting days by shooting elsewhere.
